ELEPHANT TOURS (INDIA)
|
Elephant Tours to the Nilgiri Biosphere :
The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve(NBR),the first of the fourteen biosphere reserves of India, established in September 1986, embraces the sanctuary complex of Wyanad, Nagarhole, Bandipur and Mudumalai, the entire forested hill slopes of Nilambur, the Upper Nilgiri plateau,Silent Valley and the Siruvani hills.
The NBR possesses different habitat types, unspoilt areas of natural vegetation types with several dry scrub, dry and moist deciduous, semi evergreen and wet evergreen forests, evergreen sholas, grass lands and swamps. The NBR includes the largest known population of twoendangered animal species, namely the Nilgiri Tahr and the Lion - tailed macaque and the largest South Indian population of elephant, tiger, gaur, sambar and chital as well as a good number of endemic and endangered plants. The NBR is the habitat of a number of tribal groups remarkable for their traditional modes of harmonious use of the environment.
The elephant is the largest of the land mammals. There are two species, the African Elephant and the smaller Asiatic Elephant.
The elephant's size is notable. The large body is supported by massive limbs. The large ears are used for aggressive display and temperature regulations. The very mobile trunk is an extension of the nose and allows the elephant to drink and eat without bending down.
The tusks are elongated upper incisor teeth. Tusks are very useful instruments. They are used to dig for water, salt and roots, to strip the bark, fell or mark trees, for work (as in Asiatic Elephants), as a weapon of offence and defense, and as a trunk protector and rester. Both male and female African Elephants have tusks, whilst only the male Asiatic Elephants has large tusks.
There are two main threats to elephants; firstly through destruction of their habitat and secondly through poaching for the illegal ivory trade. Elephant conservation therefore, has taken the form of protecting existing habitat in national parks and enforcing the ban on trade in ivory and other elephant products.
We offer you tours extending from 4 to 10 days duration. The tours are designed to take you on a memorable journey across Bandipur, Nagarhole, Mudumalai and Wynad National Parks to help you take in the beauty of this land while wildlife viewing. The SBF tours is one of our most attractive Indian wildlife tour packages that will bring you to the forested area to watch the elephants in its natural surroundings.
The trip will be guided by Sandeep Chakrabarti/ Sandesh Kadur / D.K.Bhasker / S.Kartkikeyan / Santosh Martin / Harshavardhan Varma / Chummi Poovaiah who are naturalists accredited by the Wildlife division of the Karnataka forest department.
The Sloth Bear Foundation is a non-profit, self-reliant and independent organization registered as a trust. Participation in tours and expeditions contributes the needed money to fund the SBF conservation and rehabilitation projects.
