BEAR WATCHING TOURS

Bears can be found throughout the world except Africa and Australia. These are generally large animals with a big body, short legs, round ears and forward facing eyes. The bears are as old as 40 million years. The fossils of the earliest known bear “ Ursavus elemensis” was found in Miocene Epoch in Europe. This animal was small, the size of a dog and all the modern bears are known to be the descendents of the Ursavus elemensis. There are eight species of bears living in the world today. Bears are classified as carnivores, with each species having a variable degree of herbivorous tendency.

The bears world over are under tremendous pressure and their numbers are decreasing day by day. The loss of habitat , man-animal conflicts , their use in entertainment as dancing bears in Asia and Europe, in bear baiting in Pakistan and as medicine(Traditional Chinese Medicine-TCM) and food in countries like China, Korea, etc are responsible for the decline in the bear population. The bear bile is believed to cure a lot of ailments like cirrhosis of liver, jaundice, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart diseases, tooth decay and eye infections. This belief is however not scientific and misleading. There are about 8000 Asiatic Bears in the bear farms in South East Asia today .The bear paw soup is considered a delicacy in the Chinese Restaurants.

The eight bear species of the world are :

  1. Brown Bears
  2. American Black Bears
  3. Asiatic Black Bears
  4. Polar Bears
  5. Spectacled Bears
  6. Sun Bears
  7. Giant Panda
  8. Sloth Bears
The sloth bear belongs to the family ursidae which includes all the eight species of bears mentioned earlier. The sloth bear, is small and usually black with long shaggy coat. Brown and grey hairs may be mixed in with the dark coat, cinnamon and reddish individuals have also been reported. It has a distinctive whitish or yellow chest patch in the shape of a wide ‘U’ or ‘Y’. The snout is light coloured and mobile.

The sloth bears are found in the forested areas and in grasslands, predominantly at lower elevations. They apparently favour drier forests and have been reported to prefer areas with rocky outcrops. The sloth bears are found in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.

The sloth bears are killed by the farmers as they damage their crops and are also hunted for their prized gal bladders which are used in medicine in Asia especially China.

The sloth bears were originally classified as belonging to the Sloth family of south America in 1700’s and were named as bear sloths. The reason was their slow gait and ability to climb trees and the massive consumption of insects, especially termites. Once the first live sloth bear was shipped from India to Europe in 1810, the scientists corrected the error and renamed them. The life span of a sloth bear in the wild is unknown and lives upto 40 years in captivity.

SBF has developed an unequaled sloth bear viewing program for 4 days to excite even the most seasoned wilderness traveler, adventurer and photographer. You'll have the unique opportunity to take lots of photos and take home memories of this extraordinary trip.

The trip will be guided by Sandeep Chakrabarti/ Sandesh Kadur/ D.K.Bhasker/ S.Kartkikeyan/ Santosh Martin/ Harshavardhan Varma who are naturalists accredited by the Wildlife division of the Karnataka forest department.
