Perhaps the largest carnivorous land animal on earth, the polar bear weighs about 200 to 800 kilograms and attains a body length of 8 feet 5 inches. These bears are also the most aggressive of all the bear species.

It is found in the polar north, in countries like Greenland, Norway, Canada, Alaska and the former Soviet Union. These are almost carnivorous, feeding on ringed and bearded seals, young walruses, etc. These are usually solitary except for the females with cubs. The females attain sexual maturity between 5 and 6 years. The mother usually gives birth to 1 - 4 cubs. The cubs remain with their mother for about 2.5 years.

Conservation status : These bears are listed as Appendix II in CITES.
