The giant panda is one of the most beautiful and the most misunderstood animal on earth. For years it was believed that it belonged to a racoon family, then later after observation and genetic testing, it was classified under the bear family.,

The panda has a large head and a distinct white and black colouration. The giant pandas are found in China living in very great altitudes of 4000 to 11500 feet. The panda habitat in China has thick patches of more than 3000 species of bamboos, which is the food for these animals. The giant pandas are vegetarians with bamboo making 99 % of their diet. They also feed on eggs, rodents, rats, etc. The new born weighs only 3 to 5 ounces. The males weigh 87 to 125 kilograms and attain a body size of 160 to 190 cms and the females weigh 70 to 100 kilograms.

The females reach sexual maturity between 4.5 to 6.5 years. The cubs are born in August and September and usually range from 1 to 3 cubs. The cubs stay with their mother for more than 2 years. The giant pandas are solitary animals.
