The brown bears are found in many places like Europe, Asia, USA and Canada. The colour of the brown bear varies from creamy to black. The brown bear has many sub- species, they are, the Alaskan brown bear, Himalayan brown bear, Kodiak brown bear, Grizzly bear, the European brown bear, etc.The weight of this animal varies throughout the year as they generally hibernate during winter and reduce weight. The male brown bear weighs from 135 to 400 kilograms, while the female weighs from 94 to 210 kilograms. The largest of all known brown bears is the Kodiak bear which lives in the Kodiak Islands of Alaska and is sometimes considered as the largest land carnivores in the world.
The most familiar of all the brown bears is the Grizzly which gets its name from the grizzled appearance of the fur coat. The brown bears attain sexual maturity at the age of 4.5 to 7 years. It gives birth to 1-4 cubs during the winter hibernation and the cubs stay with the mother for about 2.5 years . The brown bears live for about 20 to 25 years in the wild. They are mainly carnivorous animals generally feeding on insects, small vertebrates, frogs, eggs of birds, ants, bees, fruits, herbs, seeds, vegetables, nuts and honey. Salmon fish forms a substantial diet of these bears as it is found in large numbers during the spawning period.
Excessive hunting and destruction of the habitat have all but wiped out these majestic creatures.
Conservation status: These bears are listed as Appendix II in CITES.
