The foundation will have a tie up with the Forest Departments to develop the bear and the other wildlife areas in India especially Karnataka. It intends to work in the following fields:
- Studies on the fragmented habitats and populations :
There are several scattered habitats of Sloth Bears in India, especially in the northern belt of Karnataka, which are the drier regions of Bellary, Koppal, Chitradurga, Davanagere and Raichur districts. One major work of the foundation is to map all these scattered habitats and conduct a census on the population of the Sloth Bears.
- Research and studies on ecology and behaviour of the scattered population :
It is intended to study the ecology and behaviour of the scattered population across India especially in the northern belt of Karnataka.
- Interaction with other organizations and individuals :
The foundation will be constantly interacting with all organizations and individuals interested in the Sloth Bears and other wildlife. The foundation also intends to associate itself in the development of Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary which is one of its kind in India.
- Spreading awareness :
The foundation intends to spread awareness about the endangered Sloth Bears and other wildlife and their dwindling habitats. One of the key areas is to draw the support of the youngsters and the hunters for the work on conservation.
- Developing the Habitats :
The foundation will assist the forest department in developing the fragmented habitats in areas like developing water holes, setting up wireless equipments for communication of the staff, fencing, laying roads, water shed project, etc.
The foundation will fund the active patrolling of the bear habitats. The patrols are comprised of forest guards , the foundation staff and volunteers and represent a community wide effort to keep out illegal wood cutters and poachers. Protection for the Daroji bear sanctuary has helped in the regeneration of many trees and in turn has increased the availability of food in the sanctuary.
The foundation will assist in the planting of various tree species in the degraded areas of the bear habitats. It intends to set up botanical nurseries to grow fruit trees like custard apple, ber , Singapore cherries, etc., by hiring local people. By planting trees, we can expand the effective forested areas for the Sloth Bears.
- Community development in the surrounding villages :
The foundation plans to take up community development projects in the villages near the bear habitats to create a better understanding between the park managers and the villagers. It plans to address problems of drinking water, health, sanitation, education, etc. It also plans to take up eco-development projects by educating, encouraging and financing the villagers to set up solar and gobar gas based cooking, heating and lighting system, so that the pressure on the natural forest for wood is reduced.
- Rehabilitation of Dancing bears and the owners :
With the approval of and in association with the forest departments, the foundation intends to develop a rehabilitation sanctuary for the dancing bears. There are about 1000 dancing bears in India which have to be confiscated and rehabilitated. Efforts also will be made to rehabilitate the owners of the dancing bears.
- Reduce man-animal conflicts :
The foundation aims to reduce the bear and man conflicts in many places by following the example of Daroji bear sanctuary, where these conflicts have greatly reduced. Protection to this sanctuary has helped in the regeneration of many fruiting trees and the availability of food has increased, thereby these animals invading the nearby farms for food has reduced considerably.
